Upton AA rounded off the season in style as they beat Blacon 2-0 at Chester's Swansway Stadium to retain the Cheshire Senior Cup.

The final was a repeat of last season's fixture and ultimately produced the same result as Upton's class came to the fore against their lower league opponents.

Yet it was the more youthful Cheshire Division Two side that enjoyed the best of the opening 20 minutes, causing Upton problems in dangerous areas.

But Upton settled into the contest and took the lead when Alan Dorrian latched onto a long punt out of Upton's defence and his lofted effort found the net for the opener.

That advantage was doubled by on 32 minutes by Steve Rowlands, whose rising half volley from the edge of the box nestled in the top corner.

The stunning finish atoned for a poor miss minutes earlier when he miscued his shot from close range with his weaker left foot.

Blacon briefly threatened to reduce the deficit before the interval, but Upton's defence, impressively absorbed the pressure until the break.

Todd Reid's Upton side showed their composure in the second half, preserving their lead well by controlling possession and applying pressure on the ball high up the pitch.

Any hopes of a Blacon fightback were ended when they were reduced to 10 men on 70 minutes, with a midfielder dismissed for a second yellow card.

Delighted Upton boss, Reid said: "To a man, I thought we were excellent and it was a brilliant way for us to end the season.

"I felt that after the initial 15 minutes, where they showed a lot of energy, our experience helped us control the game.

"The pitch was in superb condition and when we stepped up the pace I thought we passed it well and really looked after the ball.

"We've scored two very decent goals and after that I thought we were comfortable. They had spells of pressure, but nothing that caused us too many issues in front of our goal.

"The game was already won at the time of the sending off and I'm just delighted that the club has ended this season in strong form and with a trophy."
