DIRECTOR of rugby Nic Corrigan signalled a job well done as Chester defeated Bromsgrove but he warned his players not to rest on their laurels if they want to retain their places.

Chester headed into theirNational League Two North clash on the back of victory over Hull while Bromgrove were licking their wounds after a heavy 90-5 loss at the hands of Sedgley Park.

And it appeared like a second consecutive win for Chester would arise as they raced into an 8-0 half-time lead courtesy of Tom Gregory’s try and Rhys Hayes’ penalty.

But the hosts hit back with a converted try shortly after the break before a Tom Evans try and two for Mike Craven settled matters in Chester’s favour for a 27-7 victory.

“Bromsgrove had a heavy loss the week before, but they are a robust team and would have been looking to bounce back so I felt we dealt with them well,” he said.

“I was really impressed with our teams defence. After they got back to 8-7 after 42 minutes we then went on to win 27-7.

“We just have to be more ruthless and robust for the whole 80 minutes. In defence we have been very good, we just need to improve on our attack.

“It’s all about performance, we had a good result from the second team at the weekend, and I’m not afraid to change things around if players aren’t performing.

“I am looking for players to step up and show me they want play at National League Two and then League One level and be a part of the journey that this club is on.”

Chester notched up their first points on three minutes via Hayes’ penalty before Gregory dotted over on 18 minutes, although the conversion was missed.

A Phil Horton converted effort reduced the arrears to a point but Chester gave themselves some breathing space with Evans’ try, converted by Hayes on 51 minutes.

The final two tries would not come until the final ten minutes through Craven but before this Chester had been reduced to 13 when both David Ford and Evans were sin-binned.

And Corrigan praised his side’s resilience.

“Part of the reason for the yellow cards was due to the way Bromsgrove wanted to play, but the players reacted and looked after each other which is pleasing to see,” he added.
