MORE than 6,000 people laced up their running shoes for the 37th Essar Chester Half Marathon yesterday (Sunday, April 29).
After a rainy night, the weather took a turn for the better as crowds turned out to watch the popular spectacle.
Started by the Town Crier and a local family from Claire House Children’s Hospice at 9am, the runners headed from Chester Racecourse to wind through the city taking in Watergate and Northgate, the Rows and Cathedral before venturing out into the countryside.
Speaking ahead of the event, joint organiser Chris Hulse said: “Runners are coming from far and wide to participate in the North West’s premier half marathon, joining an impressive local contingent.
“We have a fantastic finish area at the Town Hall Square which produces an atmosphere that is second to none. To say there is a carnival atmosphere is putting it mildly. Besides giving their support to the runners heading down Northgate Street, the spectators undoubtedly share their triumph at completing the 13.1 mile challenge.”
Whilst the elite runners finish the race in just over an hour, the majority will take up to two hours and more, providing plenty of opportunity for spectating.
“There are many novice runners tackling the race for the first time this year, who were inspired by the spectacle of the previous year,” said Chris. “Others are prompted to volunteer to be involved in a such an exciting event!”
