A Chester man has received a suspended sentence for a single punch which left his victim on the floor with a broken jaw.

Zack Beddows, 20, of Hoole Lane, was on a night out in Cruise nightclub on Boxing Day 2016 when he got into an argument with Liam Harrison.

A fight broke out and both men were ejected by staff at the nightclub.

CCTV footage showed the two meeting again at 1.44am the same night on Foregate Street.

Prosecuting at Chester Crown Court today (Tuesday), Owen Edwards said Beddows was shown to be aggressive towards Mr Harrison before the punch was thrown.

Friend Laura Mount, who witnessed the attack, said Beddows looked "hyper, spoiling for a fight".

After the assault - a single, hard-hitting punch - Mr Harrison fell to the floor and felt confused and dazed, as well as feeling a loose tooth in his mouth.

His jaw was broken in three places and required surgery with a metal plate needing to be inserted.

He was left with a permanent scar on his mouth which has left him self-conscious and even affected his career, Mr Edwards added.

The court heard Beddows was extremely contrite, had pleaded guilty, and wanted to apologise to Mr Harrison for his actions.

Beddows had had a difficult upbringing and was working as a gardener with future ambitions of joining the army.

His Honour Judge Berkson said Mr Harrison had been left with permanent problems as a result of the attack.

He handed Beddows a 12-month suspended sentence, plus a 12-month community order which included 200 hours unpaid work and a thinking skills programme.

Beddows was ordered to pay £2,000 compensation to Mr Harrison and a two-year restraining order preventing Beddows from contacting him was also imposed.
