TOY retailer Smyths has quashed rumours that it is to take over the massive superstore site vacated by Toys R Us.

Just a week after the Chester Retail Park branch of Toys R Us closed its doors, along with stores across the UK, rumours were circulating that toy giant Smyths was poised to swoop in.

Speculation was sparked by posters in the window of the store, albeit on the outside of the glass, advertising the Smyth’s store in Bromborough.

Although workers have been seen inside the premises, there had been no word from Smyths – until now.

Chester and District Standard:

Unfortunately, the toy giant says it has no plans to move into the site and that speculation on social media and news websites is unfounded.

A Smyths spokesperson said: “I'm afraid that we are unable to disclose internal emails, at the moment we don't have any plans to open a store in Chester.”

In February, administrator Moorfields Advisory started an “orderly wind-down” of the Toys R Us stores in the UK after the embattled firm failed to find a last-minute buyer to save the business.

Toys R Us, which had a store at Broughton Retail Park as well as Chester Retail Park, was one of the nation’s biggest toy retailers, with more than 100 stores in the UK.
