FOOD and drink makers from across the county were given the chance to show off their wares to supermarket giant Morrisons in Chester.

All are in with a shot of eventually seeing their products on the shelves of the city’s store on Liverpool Road.

The event took place at Lache Community Centre and is part of the company’s drive to support local producers.

Thirteen food makers attended the event including: Western Biltong Company – 100 per cent British Beef Biltong, handmade in Cheshire; Green Sisters - Two sisters creating gluten-free and vegan samosas from a family recipe; and Cheshire Distillery - a local gin producer less than two miles from the store.

They had to pitch to Morrisons buyers, customers and Chester Divas Women’s Institute, who will decide which producers are successful.

Store Manager, Karl Andersson said: “We’ve listened to local residents and they told us that being able to buy food that is made just down the road is important to them.

“We tasted some high quality local products today and we’re pleased that so many people from Chester came to give their view.”

The most popular producers from the event will now be invited to meet Morrisons in a final round interview and successful suppliers will see their products stocked in the store next year.

Morrisons is planning work at its Chester store that will bring more facilities under one roof and the aim is that customers will find more locally made and produced food, in some cases, just a few miles from the store.
