A ONE armed golfer is preparing to take part in a major tournament this week.
Dave Waterhouse, of Ellesmere Port, is competing for the top title at the Fightmaster Cup which is being held for the first time on European soil at St Pierre Golf and Country Club in Chepstow, Wales.
The competition is the equivalent of the Ryder Cup for one armed golfers and sees players from the North American One Armed Golf Association take on a team from the Society of One Armed Golfers which represents players from the rest of the world.
Dave, who lost his right arm in a motorbike accident at the age of 18, belongs to Upton by Chester Golf Club. He was a passionate golfer prior to the accident and after the crash Dave thought for years he would not be able to continue with his hobby.
The player discovered one armed golf in 1991 and has been participating in the World Championships every year since 1993, qualifying 15 times. His current handicap is 13.
The 52-year-old said: “The Fightmaster Cup will give us a unique opportunity to compete as a team against the world’s leading one armed golfers.
“I participated in the original Fightmaster Cup in 2008 in Kentucky and it was the best experience in the world. Although we didn’t win last time, I believe we can demonstrate the passion of our team players and succeed this year.”
Mike Cole, chairman of group brands of distinction Petty Wood and food producer Epicure, added: “My son Graham is a one armed golfer so I am particularly committed to supporting the Fightmaster Cup.
“The tournament makes a really positive statement about golf as a sport and shows that it is not elitist. All players participating in the Fightmaster Cup are inspirational sports players who demonstrate their talent and drive and as a company we are proud to support this event. The standard of play is tremendous with the highest level of skill and it is a first class competition.”
The inaugural Fightmaster Cup took place in Louisville, Kentucky, in 2008 and was won by the USA. The tournament is organised by the Society of One Armed Golfers which this year will be represented by 12 of its players.
