An ex-tank commander who spent two years in Iraq and Northern Ireland admitted making over 100 phone calls harassing his wife – 80 on the same day.

Christopher Mooney, 50, from Tarvin Road, Chester, also sent abusive texts to his mother-in-law and told her he was on his way to his wife’s house”.

The couple were married in 2009 and have been “on and off” since 2012 – but split in March 2017.

Chester Magistrates’ Court heard how in April this year Mooney made more than 100 phone calls and text messages to Jessica Mooney.

Mike Gray, defending, said Mooney accepted the charges but says the phone calls were not intended to cause harassment”.

“He was in a toxic relationship,” said Mr Gray. “But he will abide with any decision the court takes.”

Mooney left the court in tears after being told a restraining order meant he would not be able to contact his wife or daughter for two years.

The court heard how Mooney was now likely to lose his job at Airbus.

He pleaded guilty and was ordered to undertake 120 hours of unpaid work and pay fines and costs of £170.
