TRIBUTES have been paid to a teenage boy who died in unexplained circumstances following an alleged assault.

Daniel Ferguson, 16, from Ellesmere Port, was taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital at about 4am on Thursday, March 9, but later became “unwell” and passed away.

The cause of his death has not been made public. Five male teenagers were arrested and have since been bailed.

Daniel’s cousin, Anthony Ferguson, has set up a Gofundme page – – to help raise money for the funeral.

He wrote: “As all of you are aware, my cousin Daniel Ferguson was tragically taken from us too early. ”

Daniel was a former Whitby High School pupil who was also undertaking a work placement at Hayrack Church Farm in Thornton-le-Moors.

A spokesman for the farm said: “We are utterly devastated to have suddenly lost one of our farm hands, Daniel, who sadly and suddenly passed away. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. We will miss him so much.”

His family are said to be overwhelmed by the amount of support they have received since Daniel passed away.

Bryn Heeley, headteacher at Whitby High, told another newspaper: “Over his time with us, Daniel established good relationships with many members of staff who would describe him as a friendly young man who tried hard. During his time with us he engaged well, particularly through his work placement where he developed a real interest. He showed dedication and perseverance in this placement and received glowing reports.

“My thoughts, and those of all the staff at The Whitby High School are with Daniel’s family at such a sad and difficult time.”
