BUS users are being urged to take advantage of an experimental service as their former service prepares to come to a halt.

The new number 26 bus service will soon be operating in the Boughton and Great Boughton area of Chester, calling at Stocks Lane, Heath Lane and Belgrave Road, thanks to Arrowebrook Coaches, a small family company which has agreed to step in on an experimental basis without a council subsidy.

The service will run to the city bus exchange at Chester Town Hall and enable users to access Chester Market and the library.

Tony Parsons, owner of Wirral-based Arrowebrook Coaches, said: “We have a bus and driver available between school runs and can operate a service between Monday and Friday.

Mr Parsons said: “We are a small company and while we can’t afford to provide the comprehensive service currently in place, we do pride ourselves on reliability and customer service.”

It will run half-hourly from 9.20am until 2.50pm, with a break for the driver’s lunch.

Cllr Pamela Hall said: “I’m delighted Arrowebrook Coaches have agreed to step in and hope residents will use the service as often as they can.

“Even better news is that the new service will run to the Town Hall where passengers can visit the market and the library.

“The number 26 service will be a great benefit for everyone”.

Cllr Keith Board, a regular bus user himself, added: “The ending of the number 6 service could have left some older residents isolated. Public transport is so important to keep our city vibrant. We’re grateful to Arrowebrook for being able to help.

“I’d appeal to the people of Chester to reduce car journeys where possible and try one of the many good quality bus services available”.

The new service, number 26, starts on Monday, September 1 and timetable information is available from the Cheshire Traveline on 0871 200 22 33 or by visiting the Cheshire West and Chester Council website.
