THERE was chaos on a major road at the weekend when traffic was brought to a standstill for hours.
From Saturday morning motorists on the A483 were gridlocked due to work being carried out at the Post House roundabout.
Traffic heading towards Chester queued all the way back to Rossett and some eyewitnesses reported cars even being driven the wrong way on slip roads off the busy bypass.
Others saw people dressed for weddings and holidaymakers stuck frustrated behind the wheel.
At 1pm on Saturday the scale of disruption and volume of unhappy motorists caused North Wales Police to issue an online statement via Twitter, which said: “Please avoid A483 Wrexham to Chester. Planned roadworks on the Post House roundabout has caused tailbacks and lengthy delays.”
A couple of hours later Cheshire Police added: “Please be aware there are long delays and standing traffic on A483 Wrexham Road. Please avoid.”
Frustrated driver Jan Osborne said: “We’ve come on at Rossett and we’ve been on here about 20 minutes now and we’re still about two miles from the roundabout.”
Lou Morgan said: “It was an absolute joke.
“I was on the way back from Broughton and it lets you take the slip road to Wrexham roundabout and then sends you right back down on to A55.
“I had to go all the way round Chester and back to Broughton to head to Wrexham via Hawarden and Hope.”
Colleen Matthews added: “I’m two hours late for work.”
The works, a precursor for £5.3 million of improvements to try to combat the traffic problems that often occur in the area, were set to be completed by 5am today.
l Yesterday firefighters were called when a car caught fire at the Post House roundabout at around 1pm.
One eye-witness tweeted: “Car on fire at Post House roundabout – avoid, very bad”.
No one from the emergency services was available for comment.
On Friday there was a collision between an Audi car and a Range Rover, also near the Post House roundabout, at about 7pm.
