PUNTERS in Chester are some of the most patriotic in England according to a national betting company.
Ahead of tonight’s crunch World Cup match against Uruguay William Hill have said 82 per cent of all bets in the city have backed England to win, higher than the national average of 75 per cent.
England are 23/20 favourites to win the match against Uruguay tonight.
Uruguay are 12/5 to win and the odds on the draw are 9/4.
The Three Lions are even money second favourites to qualify from Group D, behind Italy who are 1/10 after beating England 2-1 on Saturday.
William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly said: “After a strong showing against Italy and Uruguay’s capitulation against Costa Rica, England fans in Chester definitely fancy the Three Lions to kick start their campaign with a victory against Uruguay.”
Chester FC will be opening their bar up for the match and hope for another good crowd after they showed the first match in the Blues Bar last week.
Commercial manager Dave Riche said: “We are doing £2 a pint a until the first goal is scored thanks to Carlsberg. I think many fans might be hoping for late goal in a 1-0 win for England.”
Dozens of houses across the city have been caught up in the patriotic spirit, with large flags of the St George cross adorning houses and cars in Chester with all hoping for a good win this evening.
But workers at the Vauxhall plant in Ellesmere Port don’t seem to have caught England-mania, as they voted against taking a 90 minute break to watch the match at the plant.
