Flying the flag and keeping the faith in Chester

Staff reporter (Chester First)

WITH dozens of St George's Cross flags and bunting stretched across rooftops, this could be the Chester area’s most patriotic street.

The Leader has been out and about trying to find households that have made the most effort ahead of the World Cup in Brazil.

And we reckon football fever is at its highest in Stamford Road, Blacon – although a few streets nearby gave it a run for its money.

One resident, 50-year-old Janet Smith, was enjoying a well-earned rest from hanging out flags when our reporter dropped by.

She said: “We're definitely patriotic here; we did the same for the Queen's Jubilee!
“There might be a bit less hype surrounding this World Cup but you have to get behind the team, and this is our way of doing it.

“It’s taken a while to get all the flags up but it's worth it. I just hope we can win!”

On Saturday night dozens of households held World Cup parties for the late kick off England match and a number of bars in Chester stayed open late to show the fixture.

One fan who attended a barbecue in Saughall said: “We decided to get together at one of our houses as so my friends’ children could also watch it as a bit of a one-off.

“Although they were a bit tired by the end of the match, they still kept cheering the boys on in their England tops until the end.

“The result was a bit disappointing but I’m sure the players will take a lot from the game and hopefully beat Uraguay later this week.”
