THE daughter of a pensioner who was mugged and left bruised and battered on the ground after a daylight attack has appealed for help catching the attacker.

Clare Thomas told the Leader her mum, Colette, was still receiving treatment in hospital and may never regain her confidence.

The 76-year-old suffered a broken pelvis and multiple fractures to her shoulder after being robbed as she took a short-cut home to Tiverton Close in the Newton area on Saturday.

She also sustained serious bruising as she was pushed over by the man, who approached from behind and wrenched her handbag from her.

Mrs Thomas said: “She’s as comfortable as can be expected but we’ve been told by the surgeon that it’s going to be a long haul.

“She’s a tough cookie my mum, who has been through tough times in her life and we will be there to support and rally around her.

“It’s despicable what happened and we just hope someone knows something and can help catch this coward.”

She said it was unlikely her mum would ever feel safe walking along the same path again.

It is thought the robber may have been hiding in trees or shrubbery on a grassy area behind St Columba’s Catholic Church.

Mrs Thomas added: “We worry her confidence will never return long-term. My mum is a very independent person who has never learnt to drive so she relies on getting the bus or walking. If that’s taken away from her she won’t be able to be independent.

“She’s only been there for six months but she loves it. The social scene is excellent and it’s the first time she has really been happy since my dad died nearly seven years ago.”

Chester CID said yesterday no arrests had yet to be made, and repeated their appeal for anyone with information on the crime to contact them.

The robber was reported to be wearing a navy top with yellow piping. Call police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
