ABOUT 12,000 tonnes of recycling material went up in flames at an industrial estate yesterday.

Nine fire crews spent about eight hours battling a major blaze at Unicorn Engineering at Meadow Road, Ellesmere Port.

They were called to the scene at about 6.30am, with many firefighters remaining on site until the late afternoon.

Smoke could be seen from miles around and caused chaos for commuters travelling to work on nearby roads.

A natural gas pipeline that runs nearby had to be kept cool, and thermal imaging cameras were used to check for potentially dangerous hotspots.

The crews had the blaze contained by about 9.30am, but had to keep water jets trained on the site as thick smoke rose into the sky.

At 3pm a fire service spokesman said: “Five fire engines remain at the scene, with relief crews in attendance. The crews are continuing to damp down and cool the fire ground.”

Nobody at Unicorn Engineering was available for comment.
