FORMER pupils at a school in Chester have been selected for the university boat race.

Three ex-King’s School Chester pupils have been put forward to represent Cambridge University in April’s BNY Mellon Boat Race against Oxford University.

Veteran boat racer, Mike Thorp, 22, who left King’s in 2008, has been selected for the squad for the fifth time.

In 2010 and 2013 Mike was part of the Goldie, or second boat, but as in 2011 and 2012, he will sit in the Blue boat for this year’s main race.

During his time at King’s, Mike was a very active rower, winning a gold medal in the eight in the international Coupe de la Jeunesse rowing event in 2008.

Novice Boat Race squad members for 2014, siblings Emma and Peter Walker, are also former pupils at King’s.

Peter, 25, studies at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and was a permanent member of the King’s 1st VIII rowing team which reached the final at Henley in 2006.

He also competed at the Coupe de la Jeunesse 2006.

This year Peter will sit in the Goldie boat.

Peter’s sister, Emma, 22 is the second former King’s girl to reach the Women’s Boat Race squad after Jade Whitlam.

Emma, who is also studying at Gonville and Caius, was a regular rower at King’s.

All three talented former King’s rowers will be in action over the next month in their respective boat race VIIIs.
