IT WAS a case of going back to the shop floor for one Chester health boss this week.
Tony Chambers, the chief executive at the Countess of Chester Hospital, spent a day working as a nursing assistant
Mr Chambers, cared for patients and worked with nurses at the Ellesmere Port site as part of the early morning breakfast shift this week.
Mr Chambers, who originally trained and qualified as a nurse, switched from his suit to hospital uniform as part of the nationally organised NHS Change Day initiative.
NHS Change Day is a 'Call to Action' by frontline NHS staff for all NHS staff, patients and the public which was started by junior clinicians and improvement leaders.
The idea is to get as many people as possible to pledge to do one thing to make the NHS better.
The chief executive, who spent his shift at Ellesmere Port Hospital, said: “In the run up to NHS Change Day, we have been asking colleagues at all levels of the organisation to think about the small things and the big things that we could do differently to improve the way we deliver care.
“I took the decision to go back to my grass roots and spend time on a busy ward where we care for frail and elderly patients. I had the opportunity to feed, dress and wash patients and get them mobile for the day.
“What I saw was a truly authentic healthcare team whose very core was about ensuring personal and compassionate care for patients and each other.
“The whole experience was a real privilege.”
More than 110 pledges have been made so far by staff at the Countess of Chester Hospital for NHS Change Day, all of which are intended to contribute towards improving patient care.
Ideas have ranged from nurses trying out the special renal diet that is fed to patients with kidney disease, to a Trust-wide commitment to improving signage.
