TWO Chester primary schools have been making decorations and trying Chinese food as part of their celebrations for Chinese New Year.
The Arches Primary School in Blacon had a day of making decorations before a Chinese-themed banquet.
Lisa Johnson, reception class teacher at The Arches Primary School, said: “We always come together with year one to celebrate Chinese New Year. It is an annual celebration here.
“It is the year of the horse this year so we are making traditional Chinese decorations. We have made some lotus flower decorations.
“The children have learnt how to write their names in Mandarin and learnt how to say hello in Mandarin as well as learning how to say happy new year in Cantonese.
“They have also made traditional money wallets because that is what Chinese people give to each other in their new year celebrations.
“The pupils enjoyed having a Chinese banquet and they also made a dragon’s head as part of the celebrations.”
Pupils at Dee Point Primary School, Blacon, tried out Chinese cuisine.
Michelle Basnett, catering supervisor, said: “The kids like to have specials on and it was Chinese New Year so we thought we would do a Chinese menu. It seemed to go down very well.
“We try and do one special meal a term to encourage them to eat school meals, to get them into it.”
