A SHOP owner has appealed to the public to stop letting their dogs foul on the City Walls.
Jackie Egerton, who runs the Edges Arms shop on the Walls, said the problem of dog mess has been getting worse in recent months.
She appealed to owners to take a doggy bag out with them before going for a walk.
She said: “We put a bowl out outside the shop for dogs to have a drink. We do not have a problem with dogs but lately it seems the amount of dog mess on the Walls is getting worse.
“We rave about how nice the city is but people continue to let their dogs make mess.
“The walkways are narrow so it is quite hard to avoid. In daylight hours there is a chance but at night time it is very difficult.
“It is very unpleasant. It does not show our city off. We have notices around here about penalties but it does not seem to have any effect.”
Jackie also said it was everyone’s responsibility to look after Chester’s history and offered to give dog walkers a bag if they forget theirs. She added: “We are a historic city and that is why people visit us. We are not a beach resort and people come to see the Walls and Rows and so on.
“We need to keep them clean and we can certainly do something about it.
“If people want a dog bag they can come into the shop and pick one up.”
A spokesman for Cheshire West and Chester Council, Laura Johnson, said: “We maintain the Walls on a regular basis but we rely on members of the public to be our eyes and ears. If anyone sees any irresponsible owners who are not cleaning up after their pets then please get in touch.”
If you want to report any dog mess in the city then you can contact the Streetscene team through the council website or ring them on 0300 1238123.
