City road closed after man's bridge jump threat

Staff reporter

A MAJOR city centre road was cordoned off for more than two hours because a man was threatening to jump off Grosvenor Bridge.

Police closed Grosvenor Road at about 9.45pm on Tuesday after being alerted by a passer-by to a man stood on the edge of the bridge.

Police negotiators spent about two hours trying to talk the 39-year-old local man, who was reportedly drunk, down from the bridge.

He was eventually brought down to safety at 11.20pm and was arrested by officers on suspicion of wasting police time.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service sent three fire engines and the rescue boat to the scene with North West Ambulance Service dispatching a rapid response vehicle.

Grosvenor Road was closed at Overleigh roundabout and its junction with Castle Drive with motorists forced to find alternative routes in and out of the city.

The road was reopened shortly after midnight.
