IS TINY Thomas Jones Britain’s youngest swimmer? The baby made a splash on his first ever swimming lesson – aged just six days.

With a smile and a gurgle, little Thomas, from Sealand took the plunge this month and became one of Water Babies’ youngest ever babies to start the specialist baby swimming lessons in Chester.

Thomas’ mum Vikki said: “The swimming lesson was great and our lovely instructor Claire really put us at ease. I have always wanted my little ones to be confident in the water so was keen to start lessons as early as possible. I loved the experience so much I will be taking him every week.

“Normally, babies start at around six weeks,” said Ali Ogden, who runs Water Babies classes in the area, including Chester, “so six days is definitely unusual and makes Thomas one of our youngest ever babies.”

Thomas is being taught by  instructor Claire Edwards who said: “There are so many amazing benefits to teaching babies to swim from birth. For a small baby, reliant on others for every aspect of their lives, being in water can be incredibly liberating.

“Swimming with your baby is a very special experience, where you’re able to focus purely on each other and enjoy the closeness that playing in water creates. Babies just love being in water – as you can see from the excited smiles and gurgles around the pool, and swimming from birth is entirely natural.

“After all, they’ve just spent the last nine months in the womb! In fact, some of our younger babies have a snooze during lessons which shows just how relaxed they are.”
