Motorists warned of overnight road closures

OVERNIGHT repair work involving road closures and diversions takes place on the A550 Welsh Road near Chester next week.

Drivers using the route between Shotwick and Hooton are advised closures are planned for four nights between Monday, October 15 and Friday, November 16.

The road is undergoing a £70,000 Highways Agency retexturing project to help maintain skid resistance and the work involves renewing the treatment on top of the carriageway surface which helps provide grip for vehicles.

Highways Agency project sponsor Jakub Malaj said: “This is important, if routine, work to ensure all users of the A550 in this part of the network can continue to enjoy safe journeys.

“There are good diversions in place for those travelling through the area but people needing to access communities off or alongside the A550 should allow themselves a little bit of extra time to complete journeys and take the appropriate diversions which will be clearly-signed.”

The road runs between junction five of the M53 at Hooton down to the A494 at the end of the M56 and on to the border with Wales.

Residents relying on the A550 to access properties and communities off the route will be advised of the actual dates for overnight closures well before any work starts and closure dates will also be signed in advance along the road.

All work will be confined to overnight periods between 10pm and 5am and no work will take place at weekends. The work will take place in three phases with a total closure of the route between the A494 at Shotwick and A540 at Two Mills in the first phase.

This work will be followed by a night’s closure of the northbound carriageway between A540 Parkgate Road at Two Mills and the A41 Chester Road at Hooton and a further night’s closure to allow retexturing of the southbound carriageway between Chester Road and Parkgate Road.

In all cases, including the second and third phases of the work where use of temporary traffic signals to manage traffic past the roadworks is not possible, diversions will be in place, including those for traffic needing to access communities along the A550.

Access to and from local roads off the A550 will be closed at times depending on each phase of the roadworks.
