Fundraising dad to cycle across the US

A FATHER-of-two is planning to cycle thousands of miles across America to raise funds for charity.

Tony Hill, of Chorlton-by-Backford, between Chester and Ellesmere Port, has been training ‘vigorously’ for the bike ride from Los Angeles to Boston.

He is hoping to raise £3,415 for Multiple Sclerosis Society to match the number of miles he will have to travel, which will see him ride over mountains, past deserts and through large cities.

Tony, who will be celebrating his 59th birthday on May 12, the first day of the trip, said: “I am doing this with a group.

The whole trip will take 49 days which is an average of 85 miles a day. I have been losing weight as part of my training and have lost a stone since Christmas.

I have been going out riding with Chester Easy Riders, going to the gym and running.”

Tony, a sales director for an engineering company, added: “The reason I chose this was because I lived in Boston for three years.

When I came back from Boston, I suppose after living there I fancied going back and riding across the States.

I have been to 33 of the States so far and I am going to check a few more off this time.”

The route takes him over the Continental Divide in New Mexico, along historic Route 66 and to the Dalton Brothers’ Hideout in Kansas.

Continuing east he will ride the Lewis and Clark Trail in Missouri, cross the mighty Mississippi into Illinois, and pedal through historic Brattleboro, Vermont and Lexington, Massachusetts.

He added that for the first time he would see the deserts of the South West and Amish country in Pennsylvania.

“I am paying for the trip myself,” said Tony. “I am raising funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society because my sister-in-law died of MS of over 30 years. I have raised money over the past 10 years."

So far Tony has managed to raise about £800.
