THERE will be lots of colourful fun in store for older residents in Chester as Sanctuary Housing holds its annual Purple Day celebration.

The free event, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, is open to everyone and takes place at Blacon Adventure Playground, in Kipling Road, Blacon from 11am-3pm on Monday, October 1.

Purple Day is an annual celebration for older people, held to coincide with Older People's Day and inspired by the well-known Jenny Joseph poem 'Warning', which opens with the line: 'When I am an old woman I shall wear purple…'

Organised by Sanctuary's Group of Older People living in Sheltered Housing (GOSH Enterprises), the event will feature a wide variety of activities and entertainment including live music, bingo, a raffle, tombola, nail painting and a host of stalls.

Visitors will also be able to meet the animals on the adventure playground's on-site farm, try Zumba and tuck into a tasty spread of free refreshments.

Local organisations including Age UK, PennySmart and Deafness Support Network, along with Sanctuary's maintenance and telecare teams, will be on hand to offer advice to residents and free transport to and from the venue can be arranged for residents otherwise unable to get there.

Maggi Dempsey, Sanctuary's resident involvement officer, said: "Purple Day is always one of the highlights of the year and we look forward to welcoming older residents from all over Chester to enjoy our very special 10th anniversary celebration.

"We are committed to helping our residents lead happy, fulfilled lives and Purple Day is a wonderful opportunity for people to come together, have fun and celebrate with others from their local community."

This project is funded by Sanctuary's Community Investment Fund, supporting projects which benefit Sanctuary residents and their communities.
