THOUSANDS of runners are expected to take part in the MBNA Chester Marathon and Metric Marathon and the team behind the event are giving local people the opportunity to get involved – and have fun doing it!

“We need volunteers to help to marshal the Marathon courses, assist in the Mini Marathon and engage in numerous other activities,” said Pauline Carpenter, volunteer co-ordinator for Active Leisure Events who also organise the Aldi Chester 10K and Essar Chester Half Marathon.

“The athletes tell us how much they appreciate the support of volunteers who themselves get a big kick from being part of the race.

"Many people come forward to join the team every year because they enjoy the experience so much and have made lots of new friends in the process.”

Pauline explained that volunteers really don’t need any special skills to be part of the event, just common sense, enthusiasm and a smile!

The MBNA Chester Marathon and Metric Marathon take place on Sunday, October 7.

Kim Hopkins leads a team of marshals from Chester Road Runners.

Kim said: “We have great fun together supporting the athletes and everyone who gets involved gets a lot out of being part of the race. Many people come forward to muck in because they enjoy the experience so much and have made lots of new friends in the process.

"Some of these actually replace people who have been inspired to run the race itself or its companion event the MBNA Metric Marathon. It’s a great day out!”

Pauline added: “We are inviting people, whether as groups of friends, workmates, running clubs or community groups, to get in touch with me as soon as possible. Even if you intend to visit the event to watch the action you might like to offer your services for a couple of hours.

“Volunteers don't only contribute to a safe and enjoyable race - they also have a lot of fun doing it!”
