A MAN has been arrested after more than £10,000 worth of damage at Chester Cathedral is believed to have been caused.

It is alleged an intruder broke in, smashed four stained glass windows and damaged other property, as well as stealing money from the premises.

Police officers were called to investigate the incident, which happened just after midnight on Tuesday, September 4.

A Cheshire Constabulary spokesman confirmed a 36-year-old Chester man has since been arrested in connection with the incident.

It is believed footage of the incident has been captured on the cathedral’s extensive CCTV system.

The Acting Dean, Jane Brooke, said: “The damage the building has sustained, to four stained glass windows, which date back to the 1920s, is very upsetting; in particular, the damage caused to a window celebrating St Werburgh, the Patron Saint of Chester."

The damage caused to the cathedral is currently being reviewed, and is likely to exceed £10,000.
