A LITTLE SUTTON man who had had "about 20 pints" punched a man in a bar, leaving him with a black eye and concussion.

Sonny Jones, 27, of Parklands, admitted assaulting Phillip Calland at Madison Cafe Bar on the night of June 3 when he appeared at Chester Magistrates Court on Friday (August 16).

He was fined £500 and must pay £200 compensation to Mr Calland.

Prosecuting, Rob Youds told the court Mr Calland was punched to the face in a "pre-meditated, unprovoked attack".

Jones was voluntarily interviewed by police, where he said his fiancée had left him and taken their three-year-old daughter and dog.

At Madison Cafe Bar, he was led to believe Mr Calland was bullying his little brother and "had an urge to punch him", but "did not want to hurt the victim – the punch was a warning shot".

Mr Calland had a black eye as a result and, on advice from his GP, went to hospital where a doctor said he had had concussion.

Jones had two previous convictions.

Defending, Adrian Evans said Jones was clearly not in a good place emotionally at the time of the assault, drinking "far more than he normally would".

Mr Evans added: "He realises that whatever was going on, there is no excuse for his actions to the victim."

His fiancée had since moved back in with him along with the daughter as they were trying to make things work.

In addition to the fine and compensation, Jones must pay £85 court costs and a £50 victim surcharge.
