AN ELLESMERE Port man has been jailed for 54 weeks for stealing number plates, activating his suspended sentence and failing to surrender.

James Monagham, 25, of Caernarvon Court, pleaded guilty to the theft, which happened in Pooltown Road, Great Sutton, in the early hours of June 7.

Monagham, who also pleaded guilty to possession of the class B drug cannabis, was sentenced at Chester Magistrates Court on Tuesday, July 10.

Prosecuting, Rachel Chandler said the theft of the number plates happened between midnight at 1.25am on June 7 when Monagham took them off a black Audi A4.

A subsequent police search at Monagham's home revealed an amount of cannabis.

Monagham admitted breaching a suspended sentence imposed on February 23 for driving while disqualified and uninsured.

Defending, Richard Simm said Monagham had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.

Magistrates sentenced Monagham to 18 weeks each for the number plates theft, breaching the suspended sentence and failing to surrender, plus a £115 victim surcharge.
