A pensioner has transformed his garden to celebrate the World Cup and raise money for charity.

Len Jones, of Willow Park, Mancot, has spent weeks creating a mini tournament in time for the game, with the theme ‘England take on the world’.

The 85-year-old said he has been transforming his garden to celebrate various sporting events such as the World Cup, the Olympics and the Six Nations rugby, for over four years to raise money for the Welsh Air Ambulance.

He said: “What we raise is good, there’s no passing traffic here and we do get the odd couple of strangers who walk past and put some in, but we do alright.

“I enjoy doing it, it keeps me going. More people should definitely get involved with events such as the World Cup.

“It’s a bit of time, that’s all it takes, and it doesn’t cost much, it’s the time that’s all.”

Len set the theme as England takes on the World and included players from different countries to display on his miniature football pitch to 'compete' against the English team.

Himself and his partner Doreen regularly fundraise for the Air Ambulance service because they believe it is a good cause.

Having already raised £930 over the past four years, Les said: “It’s all for charity and they are unpaid, and they need a lot of help, we want to do our bit to help.

“You don’t often see things in the community and it’s an idea I had. I wanted to show it off, my artwork is improving, the models are the best I’ve done yet.

“We have no set target to raise, we just want to do what we can and see what comes.”

The couple, who have lived in the area for 28 years, have a pot at the end of their garden for passers-by to donate any change they have for the cause.
