A GIRL aged five who has a chronic bowel condition is to undertake a charity walk to raise money for other poorly children in hospital.

Poppy-mae Jones, of Mornington Avenue in Ellesmere Port, will trek around seven miles from Stanney Woods to Chester Zoo with parents Sharon and Simon.

She is hoping to raise £250 or more for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool where she has received treatment.

The tot has bravely dealt with two gastroenterological issues since she was a baby and her time in hospital has given her compassion for others beyond her years.

Sharon told the Standard: “Because she’s spent so much time in hospital she’s seen a lot of poorly children. She’s just a very selfless person; she’ll help anyone."

She added: "This is all her idea. A close friend is in hospital and she wanted to do it for him and then we decided to do it for everyone at Alder Hey, including the doctors and nurses. She said 'I want to walk to Chester Zoo', and I said 'do you realise how far that is?!'"

Poppy, who attends Cambridge Road Primary School, said: “I want to raise money for the poorly tummies.”

The youngster raised more than £100 for the British Heart Foundation earlier this year and has now set her sights on raising as much as possible for Alder Hey Children’s Charity.

The total on her Just Giving page is already closing in on £200 and her family are urging more people to support her.

The walk will take place on Sunday, July 15, when Poppy will be joined by her parents and two of their friends.

Sharon said her daughter’s condition means she requires a strictly managed diet and is often bloated and in pain.

But the youngster has an incredibly positive attitude to life and is constantly thinking of ways to help others.

“We’re so proud of her,” Sharon said.
