CHESHIRE firefighters are dealing with a massive fire at a chemical works.

Residents near Tata Chemicals in Works Lane, Northwich, have been advised to close their windows and doors as a precaution.

At least seven fire crews from Northwich, Lymm, Winsford, Holmes Chapel, Sanbach and Penketh have been in attendece since 9.30am this morning (Friday, June 8).

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters are in attendance at Tata Chemicals in Works Lane Northwich following reports of a fire in the conveyor belt system.

"Crews are working alongside the company's staff using breathing apparatus. One team is at ground level using a hose reel jet while another team are using a hose reel jet from an elevated gantry. Water is also being used internally on the conveyor belt system.

"Residents nearby have been advised to shut windows and doors as a precaution."

Just after 11am, Cheshire Fire tweeted that they were still dealing with the blaze and repeated the advice to residents to keep doors and windows closed.

Update - At 11.44am firefighters said they had the fire under control and have contained the water run off on site.

All persons are accounted for and there are no injuries. However, ambulances have been in attendance as a precaution .

The fire is in the conveyor belt of the kiln plant which measures approximately 50 metres by 20 metres by four metres high.
