INNOVATIVE new 'Time Credits' have been launched in Cheshire.

The new programme aims to tackle loneliness, isolation and inactivity among people aged over 50.

Through earning and spending Time Credits, local people will be supported to develop community connections, learn skills and make new friends.

Spice, the charity behind Time Credits, was founded in South Wales and has since spread across the UK. Time Credits encourage individuals to be active in their communities by giving them a Time Credit for every hour contributed.

Time Credits can be 'spent' on community, cultural and leisure activities in the local area and across Spice's national network of partners, which includes attractions such as Blackpool Tower and St Paul's Cathedral.

The Cheshire West and Chester Time Credits programme, delivered in partnership with Cheshire West and Chester Council and local organisations, forms part of the Second Half Fund, a new fund from innovation foundation Nesta and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

Cheshire West and Chester-based organisations in the commercial, leisure and cultural sectors interested in joining the programme can become part of Spice's nationwide network of corporate partners.

Spice Time Credits CEO Ian Merrill said: "We are very excited to launch Cheshire West and Chester Time Credits, collaborating with public services and voluntary and community organisations to engage more people in giving time to their community, and recognising their valuable contributions."

Councillor Louise Gittins, Cabinet member for communities and wellbeing, said: "This is such an exciting project and we are delighted to be partnering with Spice Time Credits to deliver it throughout Cheshire West. The project supports the council's ambitions to help people age well and build community cohesion and spirit. I look forward to working with the Spice Time Credits team."
