Ryan Moore produced a vintage ride aboard Magic Wand to land the Arkle Finance Cheshire Oaks on day one of the Chester May Festival.

The superb Moore attacked from the front on the daughter of Galileo who grabbed the inside rail and drew clear of her rivals up the Roodee home straight.

The race was won 12 months ago by John Gosden's superstar filly Enable, who went on to win five Group 1 races, and although it is unlikely Magic Wand will prove up to that class, she put herself in the Epsom Oaks frame with this display and is now as short as 10-1 for the Classic contest.

It was a one-two for trainer Aidan O'Brien who saddled the runner-up Forever Together, with Princess Yaiza back in third.

The opening race of the three-day fixture, the Lily Agnes Conditions Stakes over five furlongs, went the way of hot favourite No Lippy, who was backed into 6-5 and duly held on for trainer Mark Johnston and jockey PJ McDonald, albeit with four of the runners having withdrawn on the morning of the race owing to poor draws.

The Boodles Diamond Handicap over five furlongs was won by Spoof, who got up in the shadows of the post under Callum Shepherd, from well-backed Looks A Million in second. Porchy Party gave Malpas-based trainer Tom Dascombe some return with a third-placed finish.
