THE CAUSE of a massive blaze at a recycling site could not be determined, according to fire chiefs.

Firefighters from North Wales and Cheshire battled a large blaze at a recycling facility at Sandycroft Industrial Estate on Factory Road on the evening of Friday, March 9.

An investigation was launched to determine how the incident, which emergency services attended for more than 24 hours, happened.

But fire chiefs have now told the Leader the cause is unknown and the investigation has been concluded.

Several hundred tonnes of recycling waste were destroyed by fire, heat and smoke.

On arrival, firefighters found the materials well alight and initially measured the scale of the blaze as covering approximately 40 metres by 20 metres.

However the surface area of the blaze increased as the burning materials were spread out to cool, a fire and rescue spokesman added.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said at the height of the incident eight fire appliances were tackling the blaze, which was affecting a large quantity of recycling material including baled mattresses.

The crews - which came from Deeside, Buckley, Mold, Flint, Wrexham and Cheshire - used four hose reel jets, five main jets and a pair of ground monitors.

The high volume pump and incident command unit were also mobilised. Factory road was closed as the emergency services dealt with the fire.

Nobody was injured as a result of the blaze, according to the fire and rescue service.
