AN INVESTIGATION to determine the flood risk posed to an estate by a river is set to begin.

Wrexham Council has commissioned engineers to assess the current and future risks associated with the River Gwenfro which runs through Caia Park.

Opus International Consultants (UK) Ltd have asked for information from various individuals and groups about past floods.

Around 400 homes in Caia Park are situated on a flood plain, as well as businesses and shops, and the Gwenfro has flooded the area before.

At this month's Caia Park Community Council meeting members discussed an email from Nigel Jones, principal engineer and the Wrexham-based company.

Clerk Michael Morris said that councillors with background knowledge could contribute to the consultation, but he could also respond by saying that members, and county officials would have all the relevant information.

The consultation comes after a study published by Newcastle University shows the impact of flooding, droughts and heatwaves on Europe's cities between 2050 and 2100 will exceed previous predictions.

According to the results, all 571 cities and towns examined will see a worsening of heatwaves and 85 per cent of UK cities and towns with a river are predicted to face increased flooding - with Chester and Wrexham predicted to be among the worst affected.
