MEMBERS of the public have been warned to be vigilant after reports of cold calling furniture salesmen.

Trading Standards officers at Wrexham Council are concerned about cold callers offering to sell goods such as mattresses and upholstered furniture after receiving recent complaints from residents.

A council spokesman said: "The major concern with the type of products they are selling is safety.

"Strict laws help to ensure upholstered furniture and mattresses present minimum risk in the event of fire but non-compliant products can be lethal.

"Products offered may carry labelling that claims they comply with safety standards but it is impossible to tell if furniture or mattresses are safe just by looking at them.

"Because of this, it is really important that consumers buy these products at reputable, established retailers supplied by identifiable manufacturers. Buying on the doorstep presents a high risk of receiving dangerous goods and customers will have no information or record of the seller or manufacturer’s details.

"If you have purchased a mattress or a sofa on the doorstep please report this to Citizens Advice Consumer Service 03454 040506

"If you see people going door to door offering to sell these items in your area please report this to Citizens Advice or Police on 101."
