A DEAD cow was set on fire in a field near Chester.

Fire crews were called to the scene off Picton Gorse Lane, near Hoole Bank, at around 7.15pm yesterday (Monday, February 5).

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “A deceased cow had been set alight and crews used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire. The crews then called the RSPCA.”

The RSPCA have now referred the matter on to Trading Standards, who deal with the disposal of dead farm animals.

A spokesman said: "We were contacted by Chester Fire and Rescue Service following reports that the body of a cow had been set alight yesterday evening.

”This must have been distressing to witness and we’re grateful to the people that reported it. This incident has now been referred to Trading Standards.”
