More than 1,000 women ran, jogged and walked their way to fighting against cancer.

Sisters, mums, daughters and friends took part in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life at Chester Racecourse to raise money for one of the UK’s cancer research and awareness charities.

Those taking part included women of all ages who have battled with cancer, lost a loved one to the disease and those who are celebrating a family member or friend who has been given the all clear.

The 5K race took participants through the historic Chester City Centre with a mix of terrain for them to endure.

Approximately 1,300 women took part, including local celebrity and BBC Breakfast news presenter Louise Minchin.

Diana Bridger, from Tarporley, near Chester, was the event’s guest of honour having raised more than £20,000 in the last three years for Cancer Research UK.

The 51-year-old lost her sister Margaret, 42, to bowel cancer in 2006 and just four weeks later her dad Tony, aged 69 died from bile duct cancer. She also lost her brother Dennis to lung cancer when he was 52.

Diana, who works for Lloyds Banking Group in Chester, spoke at the Race for Life about her personal story before setting the runners on their way and joining in herself.

The Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy, Marathon and Hiking events which raises millions of pounds every year to find new ways to tackle cancer.
