A year's planning will come to fruition this weekend at one of Chester's most historic summer fetes.

Held almost every year since 1875, the Christleton fete involves almost every organisation and voluntary group in the village, with about 750 people likely to attend. Organisers have been working on it for the past 12 months.

The fete will be staged this Saturday (June 24) and will begin with a parade from the village green at 1pm, when everyone will walk behind a Dixie band and the new rose queen Alex Sturgess.

Alex will be joined by the outgoing rose queen, Eliza Rose, and her supporters for the parade, which finishes at Christleton Primary School playing fields in Quarry Lane at about 1.30pm.

After the rose queen is crowned, the fete opens and the fun begins with more than 30 stalls and sideshows.

In the arena, activities include fancy dress competitions, a dog agility show, singing and dancing and at 4.15pm, the raffle with its star prizes. There will be a burger bar, beer tent, Pimms tent, prosecco and gin bar, face painting, ice cream, arts and crafts, local and exotic foods.

As always, the fete is supporting new talent with music from local artists. Every fete has its own theme and this year’s is ‘heroes’ meaning there should be some intersting fancy dress on show.

Last year, £2,450 was donated to good causes in the village from the proceeds from the fete.

More than 20 groups in the village receive sums ranging from £50 to more than £300 every year.

Admission is £5 for a family, £2 an adult, £1 for children/OAPs and under 5s go free. No dogs are admitted (unless they are a guide dog).
