A TRIAL for four-weekly bin collections across Conwy is to begin next month.

The changes in Conwy’s refuse collections (the black wheelie bin) will be introduced in phases across the county during September and will see some houses go from alternating weeks to one collection every four weeks.

This will initially be rolled out to all houses which currently have refuse collections on a Monday – with all other collection days to move to a three-weekly schedule.

Councillor Dave Cowans said: “We want to launch this initiative at the right time with minimal disruption, which is why the new collection schedule will begin in September following the August Bank Holiday and the end of the school holidays.

“This is a great opportunity for all residents to review their recycling habits and make sure that everything that can be recycled, is being recycled.

“In Conwy, over half of the average household wheelie bin is incorrectly filled with recycling and food waste which is collected separately every week.  Our teams are available if you need any advice or support.”

Gary Willetts, who has raised his concerns with Conwy County Council over the collection plans, said: “The issue will explode as the Council fails to consider its statutory duty to empty bins and failing to do so resulting in vermin and other issues such as health issues and smells are the direct responsibility of the Council.

“The answer to the problem is to collect the recycling once a fortnight and the black bins likewise.”

Conwy County Council is reminding households that only the refuse collection will change, recycling and food waste will still be collected every week, garden waste, textiles and small electrical items will be collected every fortnight and a separate nappy collection service will be available upon registration.

Additional recycling containers are also available free of charge upon request.
