SUMMER sunshine has left gardeners struggling to grow bumper crops of vegetables this year.

But that didn't stop enthusiasts in Saughall, who put on a extravagant display of fruit, vegetables and flowers at the annual village show on Saturday.

More than 300 people produced entries across 76 classes, which also included categories such as cakes and scones.

John Garner, of organisers the Saughall Gardeners' Club, said the event at the village hall had been going for at least 50 years and always drew in large crowds.

He said: “It went really well this year and we had lots of people throughout the day. It's been tough for vegetable growers and the only thing we can put it down to is the weather. For example we only had two entries for potatoes this year when usually there are 20 or 30. It was the same for carrots too.”
