AN INAUGURAL ‘Rainbow Run’ to raise funds for Nightingale House Hospice is taking place next month, with runners from all over the country taking part.
The 4km sponsored run will be taking place at Bangor on Dee Racecourse, near Wrexham, on Sunday, September 7, and is based on the Indian Hindu festival Holi.
Participants get covered in coloured powder paint while they run, walk, jog, hop or skip, as the emphasis is on being a fun family event rather than a race.
Margaret Hollings, Fundraising and Events Manager for Nightingale House Hospice said: “The Holi Festival led to the creation of 'color runs' which have been popular in the US for a number of years and have now started appearing on this side of the Atlantic.
“Tens of thousands of people attend the huge American Colour Run events, which has helped spread the buzz and excitement of this new craze over in the UK.”
The current number of entries stands at almost 400, with almost 20 new entries being received every day. It is hoped that the final number of runners will exceed the 550 mark, which will be a staggering entry for the first event.
Ms Hollings added: “We’re absolutely delighted by the response to the Rainbow Run but perhaps we shouldn’t have been to surprised when you consider the events in London, Manchester and Sunderland earlier this year were sold out.
“Thankfully, there’s more than enough space on one of the UK’s premier racecourses, so all entries are guaranteed to have a great time.”
All money raised from the event will go to Nightingale House Hospice, allowing them to continue providing care for patients from local communities and their families.
In 2014 it will cost £2.65 million to run the hospice – which equates to £7,200 per day. Only 19 per cent of this comes from the Local Health Board, which is only enough funding to support the hospice for 69 days.
The hospice therefore greatly relies on the generosity of the communities they serve to raise the additional funding for the remaining 296 days of the year.
Registration for the Rainbow Run is £14 and includes an event T-shirt, sunglasses and post-race refreshments. The minimum age is eight years old, and anyone aged between eight and 18 must be accompanied by a registered adult.
