CHESTER Zoo has been named as the best rated zoo in the UK in the Travellers’ Choice Awards for Zoos and Aquariums, announced by global travel website TripAdvisor.
The zoo, which is home to more than 11,000 animals from more than 400 species set in 110 acres of zoological gardens, is also named second best rated zoo in Europe and sixth in the world.
The awards were made based on millions of reviews by visitors to the zoos from all over the world.
Jamie Christon, managing director of Chester Zoo said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have received the seal of approval from the public and named the best zoo in the UK and indeed one of the very best in the world.
“Our sincere thanks go to every single person that has come here because, as a registered charity, their visits help us to carry out all of our vital conservation work – saving species from extinction both here in the UK and overseas.
“We’re always evolving and offering visitors new, bigger and better experiences. Every year we look to do something new and give people the very best day out.”
It’s not just Chester Zoo that has cause to celebrate this year, with the North West claiming more TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards for zoos than anywhere else in the country.
Blackpool Zoo, Knowsley Safari and South Lakes Safari Zoo in Dalton-in-Furness take fifth, eighth and ninth place in the UK respectively.
The news means the UK is home to more award-winning zoos in 2014 than any other European country, with eight ranked in Europe’s top 25.
The UK also boasts three winners among the world’s top 25 – second only to the US, which claims the most world winners with nine.
TripAdvisor spokesman James Kay said: “These awards are based on the millions of reviews and opinions written by our global community of travellers, so if you’re looking for some inspiration for a great family day out, the UK winners are a great addition to your summer holidays hit list.”
