WORK has begun on a new £6million care home in Chester.
The city’s MP, Stephen Mosley, joined Sanctuary Group to mark the start of construction on the 74-bed facility in Upton Dene.
Located on empty land near the Countess of Chester Hospital, it will offer high quality en suite residential accommodation, as well as specialist dementia care services.
The home will include a “range of communal facilities to enhance the quality of life of future residents”, with shared lounges and dining areas, an on-site café and a hair and beauty salon, according to Sanctuary.
The company has appointed contractors Castlemead to carry out the building work, which is due to end in July next year.
Ian McDermott, chief operating officer at Sanctuary, said: “The start of work is something to celebrate as not only will it provide much-needed dementia care for local residents, it also promises to create significant employment opportunities on site, during the build process and within the care home in the longer term.”
Alistair Jeffs, Cheshire West and Chester Council’s head of strategic commissioning, said: “The council welcomes the new development of the high quality care home in Chester, particularly with its focus on dementia, which is one of the greatest challenges facing our society.
“The number of people suffering from dementia is expected to double over the next decade, so it’s important to start planning for their future care needs today.”
During their site visit, Mr Mosley and other visitors saw detailed plans of the new care home and heard more about the employment and training opportunities that will be created on site during construction.
Mr Mosley said: “I’m delighted to have been here to celebrate the first spades in the ground for the Upton Dene care home. I look forward to visiting again in the future and meeting the men and women for whom this development provides jobs, as well as the people whose home it will soon become.”
Richard Shackleton, managing director of Castlemead, added: “We are obviously delighted to have been able to deliver a landmark site to Sanctuary Group and now look forward to working with them during the construction phase of this prestigious development.”
