Chester boy earns karate black belt aged 10

A YOUNG karate star from Chester is flying high after becoming a black belt at the tender age of 10.

Determined Nathan Hynes has been perfecting the Shotokan style discipline since he was five years old and was ecstatic when years of dedication and perseverance  resulted in him receiving his black belt before fellow members of the Red Triangle, KUBG Shotokan Karate club, in the Everton area of Liverpool, last Sunday.

Nathan, who attends Hoole Primary School, Hoole, Chester, received his new ranking, together with 1st Dan status, in front of his proud parents Sharon and Scott.

Mum Sharon said “We could not be any prouder of Nathan.

“ It is such a fantastic achievement and one that is well deserved.

“To become a black belt at the age of 10 is quite an achievement.

“There were a few tears on the day, tears of pride.

“Nathan has worked so hard and has been so focused. Nathan has had expert guidance and support from his club and we want to say a big thank you for that.”

Nathan, who began his training at the former Samurai Shotokan Karate Club.

Saltney, Chester, later went on to train with the Red Triangle, and now attends the club to train three times a week to train.

He was awarded his 1st Dan black belt by Sensei Andy Sherry (9th Dan) and Sensei Frank Brennan (7th Dan).

As testament to his determination, Nathan is already training hard towards becoming a 2nd Dan and spends every spare minute he can perfecting his skills.

The youngster is spurred on by the support of his loved ones and fellow members of the Liverpool KUBG Shotokan Karate club, who are like a second family to Nathan.

Sharon added: “Nathan is so proud of what he has achieved. He has been so excited and has his black belt in a box safe.

“But now he is already busy preparing for the next step. There is just no stopping him.”
