TWO canal boats became wedged underneath a city centre bridge after a low speed crash on the Shropshire Union Canal.
The barges got stuck underneath St Oswald’s Way, Chester, between Union Terrace and Canal Side after one of the boats, Dawn Chorus, tried to overtake the Mill Hotel’s canal boat, L’eau-J Cuisine, on a narrow part of the canal.
About 12 passers-by and hotel staff helped push and pull the boats apart after they became locked together at about 3.30pm yesterday, eventually being freed about half an hour later.
Neil Grice, operations manager at the Mill Hotel, who helped get the boats free, said: “We were parked under the bridge because we have been painting the boat.
“It is the off season for narrow boats so we have just been moving it when people come past, which hasn’t been very often.
“Unfortunately the gentleman captaining the other boat has tried to squeeze through without telling us. He tried to go through slowly and it wedged us up which meant we were stuck.
“Luckily we have enough paint to redo it.”
