A REALLY local version of the classic anti-war musical revue is being performed in Hilperton, near Trowbridge, next week.

Hilperton’s Lovely War is based on Joan Littlewood’s Oh What A Lovely War, but painstaking work by director Pam Turner means it includes facts about the men from the village who died in the conflict and are remembered on the Church Street war memorial.

Drama group Hilperton Presents has been at work on the show for months, with a cast whose youngest member is just nine. All have to play more than one role and sing and dance as well as act.

“It has been a humbling experience to discover more about the families and the men who fell,” said Pam Turner, who first directed the show 20 years ago when she masterminded a production at Stonar School, near Atworth.

“I am grateful for all the help I have had with the research.

“Hilperton Presents got financial support from Wiltshire Council to subsidise three events in the village to commemorate the 100-year anniversary.”

Performances are at the village hall on Whaddon Lane on November 13, 14 and 15, with a Saturday matinee. Tickets are £5 adults, £3 children from 01225 766522/769765 or can be bought Monday-Friday mornings from Sonja at the hall.
