Winsley Primary School has been praised by the Minister of State for School Reform for high achievement in its phonics check.
Year One pupils took the test, an assessment to ensure pupils learn phonic decoding to an appropriate standard by the age of six, in June. The school was in the top five per cent of schools, with at least 95 per cent of pupils achieving the standard.
MP Nick Gibb wrote congratulating the school. Headteacher Becky Wilson said: “We are absolutely delighted and really proud of the results. We know we had done really well but to get recognition at that level is lovely.”
