A father and son who left a man with a collapsed lung after a drunken fight on a train have been fined £1,000 apiece.

Builders Terence Dell, 51, and his son Ricky, 31, along with Adam Garner, of Exeter, were fined and had 120-hour community orders imposed after pleading guilty to the affray, on May 23, at Bristol Crown Court yesterday.

The 15-20 minute ruckus, which broke out after Ricky Dell insulted another man’s support for Bristol City FC, left one victim with the collapsed lung and a second with cuts and bruises to his face.

The Dells had been watching cricket at Somerset’s County Ground in Taunton, before boarding a train home to Trowbridge.

They got into conversation with the other men, and when the topic turned to football, one man said he was a Bristol City supporter.

Ricky Dell, the director of two building companies with his father, twice told him the team were “f**king sh*t”, and a fight broke out.

Because of the amount of alcohol they had all drunk both the Dells and Garner, 24, of Exeter, told Bristol Crown Court yesterday they did not remember how it had started.

The fight was broken up by two train attendants, and British Transport Police arrested the trio at Bristol Temple Meads.

Prosecuting, Alexander West said all three had drunk between eight and nine pints during the day, adding: “The victim told Ricky Dell he wasn’t giving him grief about Tottenham so he should stop doing the same about his team.”

The Dells were also told they would each have to pay £750 compensation to their victim.

Judge Neil Ford told them: “All your behaviour was inexcusable and disgraceful.

"For people in your position to be in crown court for brawling on a train is shameful.”
