The scene of the fatal crash

A LORRY driver has been killed after his vehicle ploughed into a traffic light at a busy roundabout.

Police, fire and ambulance crews rushed to the Posthouse roundabout near the England-Wales border on Friday night following the fatal crash.

The HGV’s collision with a traffic light near Wrexham Road caused the light to penetrate the cab of the wagon.

The male driver, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said the vehicle was travelling from the A483 towards the A55 when it crashed shortly after 7pm.

“Tragically as a result of this collision the driver was declared deceased at the scene,” said the spokesman.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said two fire engines from Chester attended the scene, along with the operational support unit and a supporting fire engine from Winsford.

“Fire crews were mobilised to a report of a road traffic collision on Wrexham Road in Chester where a person was reported to be trapped within a HGV,” said the spokesman.

“On arrival crews found a heavy goods vehicle that had been in collision with a traffic light, which had penetrated the cab of the wagon.

“This was a fatal incident.

“Fire crews stood by, awaiting isolation of the power to the traffic light.

“A small leak of diesel from the tank was also isolated by fire crews.”

A spokesman for the North-West Ambulance Service confirmed they attended.

The crash led to traffic delays and diversions for motorists attempting to travel between Chester and Wrexham as they could not access the Posthouse roundabout and had to follow alternative routes.

One of the road users affected was Wrexham businessman Cliff Ottley-Thistlethwaite, who was due to meet his wife from Chester Railway Station shortly after 10pm.

He said: “You couldn’t get past the mini roundabout at Rossett because of a major accident at the Posthouse roundabout.

“Cars and trucks were unable to get onto the A55 from Wrexham.”

Mr Ottley-Thistlethwaite said there were no signs or diversions in place for motorists.
